Hair Transplant Side Effects: What to Realistically Expect

Hair transplant surgery is generally well tolerated, but like any procedure, it comes with expected side effects and some less common risks worth understanding before you go ahead.

Normal, Expected Side Effects

• Scabbing at graft sites for about a week
• Mild swelling of the forehead or scalp in the first few days
• Temporary numbness in the donor or recipient area
• Shedding of transplanted hairs within the first few weeks — a normal, expected phase, not a sign of failure

Less Common Risks

Less commonly, patients can experience infection, folliculitis (small inflamed bumps around grafts), or patchy, uneven growth if graft placement or angle isn't planned carefully. A fine donor scar is expected with FUT, and can be visible with very short haircuts.

What Actually Reduces Risk

• An honest pre-operative assessment of your donor hair and hair loss pattern
• Following aftercare instructions closely in the first two weeks
• Choosing a surgeon with genuine surgical training rather than a technician-led "clinic" with no medical oversight
