Thumb Fracture: Types, Treatment, and Healing Time

The thumb's unique range of motion makes it especially important to get a fracture here right — a poorly healed thumb fracture can meaningfully affect grip and pinch strength.

Common Types of Thumb Fracture

• Non-displaced fractures — the bone is cracked but still aligned
• Bennett fracture — a fracture at the base of the thumb that extends into the joint, often unstable
• Avulsion fracture — a small bone fragment pulled away where a ligament or tendon attaches
• Proximal phalanx fractures — affecting the thumb bone closest to the hand

Signs and Symptoms

Pain and swelling at the base or shaft of the thumb, bruising, difficulty gripping or pinching, and sometimes visible deformity. An X-ray is used to confirm the fracture pattern and whether the joint surface is involved.

Treatment: Brace or Surgery?

Stable, non-displaced fractures are often treated with a thumb spica brace or cast. Fractures involving the joint surface — like a Bennett fracture — are frequently unstable and may need surgical fixation with pins or screws to restore joint alignment and prevent long-term arthritis.

How Long Healing Takes

Most thumb fractures heal within four to eight weeks, with surgically fixed fractures sometimes needing a longer period of protection followed by hand therapy to regain full strength and movement.
